Portrait Painting

February 6, 2023 by jnkiffe

Lately, since having children I haven’t the room/time to dedicate to creative pursuits. But I have been able to embrace art in painting. I studied watercolor for a bit, before finding real joy in gouache and painting faces. I’m still studying, sometimes I seek to copy the traits of a person, sometimes not, but I enjoy the way the medium lets me pick it up and come back to it if I need to stop and attend to something with […]

Small Scale Interior Design Play

January 27, 2015 by jnkiffe

I am definitely confessing my guilty pleasure with this post.  I love the Monster High and Ever After High doll lines.  The level of detail and design work that goes into them… I just had to start a collection.  My husband thinks I’m crazy, but I don’t really care. Here is another shot at trying to design a room to fit one of the Monster High doll’s themes.  The doll was Abbey Bominable the “daughter of the abominable snowman”.  Her […]

Challenge – Reluctant I

October 29, 2013 by jnkiffe

In this challenege, I could only use the personal pronoun twice – yet still tell the story from the first person perspective. I knew that look.  Georgetta Jones stood amid the tinsel and twinkle lights.  She ran her fingers through perfectly tousled hair, gaze fixed on Henry Alcott under thick lashes.  His new wife had disappeared in a huff – probably off to the washroom to freshen up after their little spat – and the shark, smelling fresh blood, swam […]

Challenge – Imperative

October 29, 2013 by jnkiffe

This challenge was to write a fragment of a story made up entirely of imperative commands.  I chose the theme Tango.       Check your reflection in an outside window; make sure everything is perfect before you go in.  Guarantee no lock out of place, no lint on your lapel, tie’s straight, shoe’s polished, breath’s fresh.  Push the double doors open when you are satisfied.     Survey the atmosphere of the salon:  the lights, dim everywhere except over the dance […]

Challenge – the Royal “We”

October 29, 2013 by jnkiffe

This one was weird, and rather difficult to execute, as it just felt wrong – like I was breaking the rules.  I was supposed to write from the pov of a close knit couple, where you couldn’t tell which one of them was narrating the story, because they both were.  I was not allowed to refer to either one in first person singular, but I had to refer to both in first person plural.  This one involves a pair of […]

Children’s Party Adventure

October 29, 2013 by jnkiffe

One day, I was struck with the inspiration to design an adventure for a child’s birthday party. Unable to ignore the idea pestering my mind, I decided to flesh it out.  It turned into an elaborate game, complete with script acted out by adults and many little games blended together into the story. When it is time for cake, the king (the birthday girl’s dad) calms everyone down and goes to retrieve it. But when he returns, he shares the […]

Floral Design

October 28, 2013 by jnkiffe

On occasion, my mother and I like to do floral projects for friends and family’s special occasions. Most recently, we did all of the flowers for my cousins wedding.  In the gallery, you can see a few samples of arrangements we did, but when the photographers photos come in, I’ll be sure to post them. Also, if you live in the Ventura county area, and you are interested in having us do flowers for your special event, email me.

Vintage Travel Guest Book

October 28, 2013 by jnkiffe

My cousin and her new husband love to travel. In fact, they had a destination wedding in Ireland (a country where they both share heritage). She asked me if I would help them find a guest book, something that reminded her of “old-world travel” type of design.  I ended up taking it a step furthur than she expected, and I created a full scrapbook for them. I took a used book called “One World”, took out all of the old pages and […]

Heroes VS Villains

October 24, 2013 by jnkiffe

This is a work in progress. In a few weeks I will get to play test it, and then hopefully I’ll have some photos of the game in action! I can’t wait. Basically, I asked all of my friends to come dressed as either a hero or a villain (and purposly asked the couples to split so the game could achieve somewhat balanced numbers). The game itself is based off of the game Cranium, where there are different categories of […]
